The Island of Burano has been called the “cheeriest place on earth.” If not the “cheeriest,” it could be one of the most colorful, too! If you're taking a day trip to the Island of Burano, Italy, here are a few ideas to enhance your journey.

Seven Things To Do On Burano Island in Italy
1. Go For A Long Walk Or Boat Tour in Burano
Bring your walking shoes, or hop on a boat tour!
The island of Burano is designed for walking; since there are no cars, the only ways to explore it are by boat, bicycle, or on foot.
Some people opt for a boat tour of the island. This way, you can see the colorful houses and canals from the water and get a unique perspective of the island.

If you enjoy exploring by walking, you can opt for walking tours. Local guides often lead these tours, offering insights into areas that guidebooks may miss, while also contributing to the local economy.
Or, my favorite way to see the Island is to get lost.
The island isn’t large and is very easy to navigate.

2. Enjoy The Local Cuisine of Burano
Burano is an island built on water, making it an excellent destination for seafood lovers.
The Island is a working fishing village with a variety of fresh seafood dishes prepared by local chefs. Shrimp, eel, clams, and fish are on most menus at the eateries on the Island.
If seafood isn't to your taste and you're looking for more Italian pasta options, consider trying the local bigoli. Bigoli [BEE-goh-lee] is a type of fresh pasta originating from the Venetian region. It resembles spaghetti in length but is thicker than typical noodles.
Whatever your culinary pleasure, come with an appetite and enjoy the local dishes! It rarely disappoints.

3. Watch A Lace Demonstration
Dating back to the 1500s, local women have passed down the tradition of lace-making to female island residents. It has become a major draw for tourists worldwide.

To appreciate a variety of historical and exquisite pieces, you can visit the Lace Museum. Additionally, numerous local shops showcase stunning works for you to enjoy, with lace makers often demonstrating their skills for your pleasure.
One-of-a-kind treasures are waiting on the Island of Burano for you to discover!
4. Photograph The Colorful Island
If you're a photographer who loves color, Burano Island is the perfect destination.
There are a few iconic spots, like the Tre Ponti Bridge or a shot from the boat upon arrival at the colorful island, that you can put on your list.

Choosing a photo theme can be a fun and enjoyable experience. Some photography projects on the island feature vibrant doors, windows, hanging laundry, canals, and lines of colorful houses.

Departing the island late in the day also makes for some great shots from the boat when the sun lowers in the sky.
Similar to Venice, Burano is a popular tourist destination, so capturing photos without people means you need to be on the streets at dawn or wait until the crowds disperse in the evening.

5. Shop For Burano Souvenirs
Burano is an excellent destination for shopping, offering a variety of unique and beautiful gifts or souvenirs, making it a great addition to your travel plans.
While Murano is renowned for its glass, Burano also has shops that sell handmade glass creations.
Additionally, there are numerous lace shops and the famous Venetian masks.

6. Indulge In The Local Sweets
At the end of a meal or while enjoying local sweet wine, check out the Bussolà Buranello cookies. These donut-shaped, yummy treats are sold in bakeries and mini-markets on the island.
However, if you are more of a gelato fan, there are many great locations. What’s better than having Italy’s famous gelato on a colorful island? It’s a happy moment.
7. Chill At The Park
If you're weary from walking and need a break while exploring Burano, consider visiting a local park or green area to immerse yourself in nature. Step away from the bustling canals, and you'll discover neighborhoods featuring trees, lawns, and park benches.

It's always enjoyable to watch the locals go about their daily lives from a distance.
It’s a small island, and thousands of tourists come ashore daily to share this beautiful, iconic location with locals.

How To Get To Burano
Burano is about an hour’s boat ride from Venice and is worth the journey.
